North Wind
Piano Mandalas always surprise me, which each new one that is created. I never know up front what the middle will be as each key is measured, carefully placed, positioned then connected….a slow and arduous process leading up to ‘what will be in the middle?’
North Wind was inspired by a hand carved Indonesian mask that begged to have the aspect of wind coming out of their mouth, hence piano strings for air. The old brass fountain behind the head leapt out as a base, yet something was missing between the fountain and the keys. A collar or some sort. After many tries at various objects, brand new piano grand hammerheads did the trick. Small details of getting everything positioned right took time, but North Wind worked out beautifully.
